With a garden that features an iconic Palladian house, a lake flanked by mature, rare trees, and plenty of picnic spots, Stourhead brings a spot of magic. Best enjoyed on a crisp autumn afternoon, when the hues of orange and russet reflect on the surface on the lake (how poetic of us) – and of course, followed by a pint or two back at the Bell.

If lions and tigers and bears (oh my) are your thing, head to Longleat. A short drive away, the lions snooze and the zebras roam about the grounds of this grand stately home. Despite the enchantment, watch out for the monkeys if driving through, they like a bit of windscreen wiper. It’s quite easy to get lost in their mazes too.

A bit further afield but well worth the trip, Sherborne is a beautiful honey-coloured stone town. You can explore the magnificent Abbey, the ruins of the 12th-century “Old” Castle, or the “New” Castle built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594, which sits within 40 acres of parkland.
